The IRS is warning taxpayers to be on the lookout for fraudulent versions of Notice CP53E, as scammers attempt to steal personal and financial information.

A legitimate IRS CP53E notice is sent when the IRS needs a taxpayer to provide or update direct deposit information before issuing a tax refund. As the IRS continues transitioning from paper refund checks to direct deposit, more taxpayers may receive this notice.

If you receive a CP53E notice, take a moment to verify that it is legitimate before responding. Do not click on links, scan QR codes, or provide personal information through unsolicited emails or text messages. The IRS initiates contact through U.S. mail, not by email, text, or social media.

If you’re unsure whether a notice is authentic, visit IRS.gov or contact our tax team for assistance before taking any action.
